Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Photovoltaics
  • Nanotechnology

Background:

  • Two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites offer superior moisture resistance for stabilizing perovskite solar cells.
  • These materials exhibit multiple layered phases (n=1, 2, 3 to ≈∞), but their vertical distribution within films is poorly understood.
  • Lack of clarity on phase distribution hinders optimal device design and performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the vertical phase distribution in 2D perovskite films.
  • To develop a method for controlling this phase distribution.
  • To enhance the efficiency of 2D perovskite solar cells.

Main Methods:

  • Confocal photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy was employed to probe film inhomogeneity.
  • Vertical phase distribution mapping was constructed using PL data.
  • A simple method was developed to manipulate the phase distribution.

Main Results:

  • Confocal PL spectroscopy revealed distinct vertical phase segregation: smaller n-value phases (n=2, 3, 4) concentrated near the substrate, while larger n-value phases dominated the top surface.
  • A novel method successfully controlled the phase distribution within 2D perovskite thin films.
  • Device efficiency significantly increased from 4.95% to 11.6% after manipulating the phase distribution.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides crucial insights into the growth mechanisms and vertical phase organization of 2D perovskite films.
  • Visualized phase distribution data offers a pathway for optimizing 2D perovskite materials for advanced optoelectronic applications.
  • Controlled phase distribution is key to unlocking higher performance in 2D perovskite solar cells.
