Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Sexology

Background:

  • Transvestic fetishism is a paraphilic disorder characterized by eroticized cross-dressing.
  • Understanding the psychological profile of individuals with transvestic fetishism is crucial for effective treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the psychological distress and sexual functioning in heterosexual males with transvestic fetishism.
  • To compare these individuals with a control group of heterosexual married males.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Derogatis Sexual Functioning Inventory (DSFI) and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI).
  • Evaluated 21 transvestites seeking psychiatric consultation and compared them with 45 heterosexual married males.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Transvestites reported significantly higher psychological distress on most BSI dimensions.
  • The transvestic group exhibited a more negative body image, perceived a more feminine gender role, and had less sexual experience on the DSFI.
  • Transvestites without homosexual experience showed less gender dysphoria but higher rates of concurrent Axis I disorders.

Conclusions:

  • Individuals with transvestic fetishism experience significant psychological distress and distinct sexual functioning patterns.
  • Homosexual experiences in transvestites correlate with earlier onset of cross-dressing and may influence gender dysphoria and comorbid conditions.
