Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging Physics
  • Nuclear Medicine Technology
  • Quality Assurance in Diagnostics

Background:

  • Current gamma camera spatial resolution measurements using bar phantoms show poor correlation with NEMA standards.
  • Existing phantoms provide only qualitative assessments, potentially misrepresenting true system resolution.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and evaluate a novel test pattern for more accurate gamma camera intrinsic resolution estimation.
  • To develop a quantitative method for assessing resolution that correlates well with established standards.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a line resolution phantom (LRP) featuring a lead disk with precisely machined horizontal and vertical slits.
  • Evaluation of the LRP on nine gamma cameras, comparing its quantitative visual estimates with NEMA-standard line spread function measurements.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The LRP allows for quantitative intrinsic resolution estimation to within 0.5 mm via visual inspection.
  • Good agreement was observed between LRP results and line spread function measurements across all tested gamma cameras.

Conclusions:

  • The line resolution phantom (LRP) is a simple, cost-effective tool for accurate gamma camera resolution assessment.
  • The LRP demonstrates significant potential for routine quality control and acceptance testing in nuclear medicine.
