Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the epidemiologic associations between plasma cGMP, natriuretic peptide levels, and cardiovascular disease risk factors in a general population.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional analysis of plasma cGMP in 1038 participants (542 men, 496 women) from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) cohort, free of cardiovascular disease and heart failure.
  • Multivariable linear regression models were used to assess associations with N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide, sex hormones, and cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Adjustments were made for established cardiovascular risk factors.

Main Results:

  • Plasma cGMP levels were positively associated with N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide, higher blood pressure, and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate.
  • Triglyceride levels, total/HDL cholesterol ratio, diabetes mellitus, and insulin resistance were inversely associated with cGMP.
  • In postmenopausal women, higher androgen levels (free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone) were inversely associated with cGMP, while sex hormone binding globulin was positively associated.

Conclusions:

  • Plasma cGMP is associated with natriuretic peptide signaling in a community-based cohort.
  • Cardiovascular and renal health markers show distinct associations with cGMP, with higher blood pressure and renal dysfunction linked to increased levels.
  • Adverse metabolic risk factors and increased androgenicity in postmenopausal women are inversely associated with cGMP, highlighting complex interactions.
