Tooth Anatomy01:21

Tooth Anatomy

1.9K
The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or...

    Area of Science:

    • Dental Technology
    • Robotics in Dentistry
    • Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

    Background:

    • Traditional manual tooth preparation faces limitations like visual deviation and hand errors in narrow oral spaces.
    • A mini-robotic system using ultra-short-pulse lasers was developed for automated tooth preparation based on 3D data.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the principles of digitally designing full crown tooth preparations.
    • To quantitatively evaluate the precision of a robotic system for automated tooth preparation.

    Main Methods:

    • Acquired Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and dental model surface scan data from 20 volunteers (40 cases).
    • Developed a systematic digital design process for full crown preparations.
    • Compared software-derived measurements (occlusal thickness, shoulder width, axial convergence angle) with design data.

    Main Results:

    • Design precision was highest for shoulder width, followed by occlusal ablation depth, and then axial convergence angle.
    • No significant differences in design precision were found across different tooth morphologies or design standards.
    • Mean errors were minimal: 0.0096 ± 0.0108 mm for occlusal ablation depth, 0.0006 ± 0.0004 mm for shoulder width, and 0.1201 ± 0.1288 degrees for axial convergence angle.

    Conclusions:

    • The digital design route for full crown computer-aided design (CAD) is highly feasible.
    • The robotic system demonstrates high accuracy in automated tooth preparation, overcoming manual limitations.
