In Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD), increased central corneal thickness (CCT) correlates with a narrower anterior chamber angle. This finding suggests a link between FECD severity and anterior chamber morphology.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Corneal Diseases
- Anterior Segment Imaging
Background:
- Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) is a progressive corneal disease affecting the endothelium.
- Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) is a valuable tool for assessing corneal and anterior chamber structures.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between central corneal thickness (CCT) and peripheral corneal thickness (PCT) with anterior chamber parameters in patients with FECD.
- To determine if CCT or PCT correlates with angle opening distance (AOD500) and trabecular-iris angle (TIA500) in FECD patients.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study comparing 20 FECD patients with 31 healthy controls using AS-OCT.
- Measurement of CCT, PCT, lens vault (LV), TIA500, and AOD500.
- Statistical analysis to assess correlations between corneal thickness and anterior chamber parameters in FECD.
Main Results:
- FECD patients exhibited significantly higher CCT, smaller TIA500, smaller AOD500, and greater LV compared to controls.
- A significant negative correlation was found between CCT and both TIA500 and AOD500 in FECD patients.
- No significant correlations were observed between PCT and angle parameters, or between CCT and LV.
Conclusions:
- Increased CCT in FECD is associated with a narrower anterior chamber angle.
- The study demonstrates a correlation between FECD severity (indicated by CCT) and anterior chamber morphology.
