lncRNA - Long Non-coding RNAs

9.7K
In humans, more than 80% of the genome gets transcribed. However, only around 2% of the genome codes for proteins. The remaining part produces non-coding RNAs which includes ribosomal RNAs, transfer RNAs, telomerase RNAs, and regulatory RNAs, among other types. A large number of regulatory non-coding RNAs have been classified into two groups depending upon their length – small non-coding RNAs, such as microRNA, which are less than 200 nucleotides in length, and long non-coding RNA...

Non-LTR Retrotransposons

13.0K
As the name suggests, non-LTR retrotransposons lack the long terminal repeats characteristic of the LTR retrotransposons. Additionally, both LTR and non-LTR retrotransposons use distinct mechanisms of mobilization. Non-LTR retrotransposons are further divided into two classes - Long interspersed nuclear elements (LINEs) and short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs), both of which occur abundantly in most mammals, including humans. Some of the active non-LTR retrotransposons in humans are L1...

Summary

This study found that LINC01433 long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) expression did not differ between non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues and normal tissues in Iranian patients. Therefore, LINC01433 is unlikely to contribute to NSCLC in this population.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Lung cancer, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality.
  • Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are implicated in the pathogenesis of various cancers.
  • The role of the specific lncRNA, LINC01433, in NSCLC among Iranian patients remains uninvestigated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression levels of LINC01433 in NSCLC tissues compared to adjacent non-tumoral tissues.
  • To determine any correlation between LINC01433 expression and clinical or demographic factors in NSCLC patients.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was employed to assess LINC01433 expression.
  • Samples were obtained from 42 NSCLC patients and their paired non-tumoral tissues.
  • Data collection occurred between 2016 and 2017 at Labbafinejad Hospital.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference was observed in LINC01433 expression between NSCLC and non-tumoral tissues (p = 0.42).
  • LINC01433 expression levels showed no association with patient age, gender, smoking history, cancer stage, or subtype.

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest that LINC01433 does not play a significant role in the development of NSCLC in the studied Iranian patient cohort.
  • Further validation with larger sample sizes is recommended to confirm these results regarding LINC01433's potential contribution to lung cancer.
