Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of interactive binocular treatment (I-BiT™) versus standard patching for amblyopia.
  • To evaluate visual acuity and stereopsis changes in children undergoing these treatments.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized clinical trial involving 38 children (3-10 years old) with unilateral amblyopia.
  • Participants received either I-BiT™ games or standard patching with a placebo I-BiT™ game for one month.
  • Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and stereopsis were assessed at baseline and after treatment.
