Surveys02:16

Surveys

16.5K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Depressive Disorders: Etiology01:27

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

387
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Depression: Overview

713
Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

521
Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

32.9K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Summary

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Sociology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Religion is a significant factor in health attitudes in Arab and Muslim countries.
  • The influence of religious beliefs on mental health among Arab and Muslim populations in the United States remains understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of religious beliefs on the attitudes of Arab-American Muslims toward mental illness, particularly depression.
  • To explore the intersection of faith and mental healthcare perceptions within this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study was conducted using the Depression Awareness Questionnaire (DAQ).
  • The study surveyed Arab-American Muslims over 18 years old at a psychoeducational seminar in Dearborn, Michigan (October 2017-October 2018).

Main Results:

  • 85.3% viewed depression as a medical illness, and 78.7% believed in treatment efficacy.
  • However, 32.0% feared antidepressant addiction, and 34.7% attributed depression to supernatural causes like black magic or the evil eye.
  • 37.3% believed closeness to God could prevent depression.

Conclusions:

  • Arab-American Muslims in the study recognized depression's severity and the importance of treatment.
  • Religious beliefs demonstrably played a substantial role in their approach to mental health and illness perception.
