Primary Healthcare Services

1.8K
Primary care promotes wellness and prevents disease. This care includes health promotion, education, protection (such as immunizations), early disease screening, and environmental considerations. Settings providing this type of healthcare include physician offices, public health clinics, school nursing, and community health nursing.
In 1978, international leaders convened in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, for what would be a pivotal event in global health. The Alma-Ata Declaration was the first to call...

Preventive Healthcare Services

1.8K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Summary

Older adults with HIV in Uganda frequently experience low physical function, particularly women, older individuals, and those who are overweight. The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) can help identify these functional limitations.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Aging populations with HIV present unique health challenges, including physical function decline.
  • Assessing physical function is crucial for managing health in older adults living with HIV.
  • Limited data exists on physical function among HIV-positive elderly in sub-Saharan Africa.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the prevalence of physical function limitations in older HIV-infected adults in Kampala, Uganda.
  • To identify demographic and clinical factors associated with low physical function in this population.
  • To evaluate the utility of the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) for assessing physical function.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 93 HIV-infected adults aged 60 years and above.
  • The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) was used to assess physical function.
  • Generalized linear regression models were employed to identify factors associated with low physical function.

Main Results:

  • Nearly half (44.1%) of participants exhibited low physical function (SPPB score 1-8).
  • Women (ARR 2.57), increased age (ARR 1.09), and being overweight (ARR 1.96) were significantly associated with low physical function.
  • Falls were more prevalent in women (32%) compared to men (5.8%).

Conclusions:

  • Physical function limitations are common among older adults with HIV in urban Uganda.
  • Targeted interventions addressing factors like sex, age, and weight are needed.
  • The SPPB is a valuable tool for routine physical function assessment in this demographic.
