Polygenic Traits01:18

Polygenic Traits

68.7K
When more than one gene is responsible for a given phenotype, the trait is considered polygenic. Human height is a polygenic trait. Studies have uncovered hundreds of loci that influence height, and there are believed to be many more. Due to the high number of genes involved, as well as environmental and nutritional factors, height varies significantly within a given population. The distribution of height forms a bell-shaped curve, with relatively few individuals in the population at the...

X-linked Traits01:19

X-linked Traits

58.1K
In most mammalian species, females have two X sex chromosomes and males have an X and Y. As a result, mutations on the X chromosome in females may be masked by the presence of a normal allele on the second X. In contrast, a mutation on the X chromosome in males more often causes observable biological defects, as there is no normal X to compensate. Trait variations arising from mutations on the X chromosome are called “X-linked”.

Advancements in molecular biology have revolutionized the identification and characterization of bacteria, with multiple methods leveraging DNA sequencing for enhanced precision. As sequencing technologies improve and costs decline, these approaches are increasingly used in clinical, environmental, and evolutionary studies.Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) examines several housekeeping genes, essential chromosomal genes encoding cellular functions, to distinguish strains. • Quantitative Genetics
  • Bioinformatics

Background:

  • Complex traits are influenced by multiple genetic factors and environmental interactions.
  • Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping is a statistical method to identify these genetic regions.
  • Previous research has established the importance of QTL in understanding phenotypic variation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a practical, step-by-step guide for performing quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping.
  • To demonstrate the application of multiple QTL mapping (MQM) in the R/qtl software package.
  • To highlight common methods and discoveries in fish genetics.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a multiple QTL mapping (MQM) approach.
  • Employed the free software package R/qtl for analysis.
  • Included a sample data file for practical application.

Main Results:

  • Presented a clear, sequential methodology for QTL analysis.
  • Demonstrated the utility of R/qtl for complex trait dissection.
  • Focused on findings relevant to fish genetics.

Conclusions:

  • The presented approach offers a accessible pathway for researchers to conduct QTL mapping.
  • MQM in R/qtl is a powerful tool for dissecting the genetic architecture of complex traits.
  • This guide facilitates further discoveries in quantitative genetics, particularly in fish populations.
