Sustainable Development

14.6K
As the human population continues to grow and use resources, we must be mindful of our planet’s natural limits. Sustainable development provides a pathway to maintain and improve human life now while also ensuring that future generations will have the resources that they need. The long-term success of sustainability efforts rests on understanding the interplay between human actions and ecological systems.

Ethics in Research01:56

Ethics in Research

25.3K
Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Quantifying Work

23.7K
As a system undergoes a change, its internal energy can change, and energy can be transferred from the system to the surroundings, or from the surroundings to the system.

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

240
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Principles of Disease Surveillance01:26

Principles of Disease Surveillance

422
Disease surveillance is the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice. This process integrates data dissemination to entities responsible for preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Surveillance systems provide crucial information for action, helping public health authorities make informed decisions to manage and prevent outbreaks, ensure public safety, optimize...

Observational Studies01:11

Observational Studies

10.6K
Observational studies are a type of analytical study where researchers observe events without any interventions. In other words, the researcher does not influence the response variable or the experiment's outcome.
There are three types of observational studies – Prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional.
Prospective Study
Prospective studies, also known as longitudinal or cohort studies, are carried out by collecting future data from groups sharing similar characteristics. One...

Area of Science:

  • Research organization and innovation
  • Open science practices

Background:

  • Growing concerns regarding research organization include escalating costs, low productivity, diminished public trust, lack of diversity, poor community engagement, ethical issues, and irreproducibility.
  • Open science (OS) collaborations, encompassing open access, open data, and fewer IP restrictions, are being explored to address these systemic issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a toolkit for collecting data on open science (OS) and non-OS collaborations.
  • To facilitate the assessment and study of the impact of OS collaborations on research and innovation.

Main Methods:

  • Gathered international representatives from diverse stakeholders to co-construct the toolkit.
  • Developed a toolkit with four elements: quantitative annual report forms, semi-structured interview guides, participant surveys, and other quantitative measures.
  • Incorporated community feedback into the toolkit's final design.

Main Results:

  • A comprehensive toolkit for measuring OS collaboration implementation and impact has been created.
  • The toolkit is designed for use by government, philanthropic grantors, institutions, researchers, and community organizations.

Conclusions:

  • The toolkit provides a framework for assessing OS partnerships.
  • Encourages stakeholders to measure and share data for broader social science and policy analysis.
