Background:

Orthogeriatric care models enhance functional outcomes for hip fracture patients.
These models improve adherence to best practice guidelines for hip fracture management.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate improvements in key performance indicators for hip fracture care.
To assess the impact of a formal orthogeriatric service on patient outcomes and care standards.

Main Methods:

Evaluation of key performance indicators following the implementation of an orthogeriatric service.
Review of compliance with Irish Hip Fracture standards of care.
Assessment of length of stay, rehabilitation access, and discharge destination.

Main Results:

Observed improvements across all hip fracture standards of care.
Reduced mean length of stay from 19 to 15.5 days (P < .05).
Increased and more timely admission to rehabilitation (16.7% vs 7.9%, P < .05), with fewer patients requiring convalescence.

Conclusions:

Standardized, integrated orthogeriatric care improves post-hip fracture patient care standards.
Orthogeriatric services yield meaningful clinical outcome improvements for older hip fracture patients.
