Signs of Puberty01:27

Signs of Puberty

1.3K
Puberty is a critical phase, typically beginning between the ages of 8 and 13 in girls and 9 and 14 in boys, though timing can vary based on genetics, environmental factors, and overall health. This period is characterized by the development of secondary sexual characteristics and the attainment of reproductive potential. Endocrine changes underpin puberty, with hormonal surges of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) instigated by Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH)...

Nature and Nurture01:10

Nature and Nurture

22.0K
Many human characteristics, like height, are shaped by both nature—in other words, by our genes—and by nurture, or our environment. For example, chronic stress during childhood inhibits the production of growth hormones and consequently reduces bone growth and height. Scientists estimate that 70-90% of variation in height is due to genetic differences among individuals, and 10-30% of variation in height is due to differences in the environments that individuals experience,...

Anorexia Nervosa01:28

Anorexia Nervosa

808
Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. It often leads to dangerously low body weight relative to an individual's age and height. This disorder is marked by significant physical and psychological consequences, making it one of the most life-threatening psychiatric illnesses.

Obesity01:24

Obesity

1.1K
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in...

Bulimia Nervosa01:30

Bulimia Nervosa

608
Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...

Summary

Child behavior problems show a marginal link to weight gain in preschoolers. Prosocial behavior scores may correlate with increased BMI z-scores, but not necessarily with increased body fat.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Child Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Inconsistent evidence links child behavioral issues with overweight.
  • Longitudinal data on this relationship is limited.
  • Understanding early predictors of weight gain is crucial for intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between behavioral problems and changes in body mass index (BMI) and anthropometry.
  • To examine longitudinal associations in children aged 2-6 years predisposed to overweight.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 345 healthy-weight children predisposed to overweight.
  • Assessed child behavior using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ).
  • Employed linear regression to analyze SDQ scores against changes in BMI z-score, body fat, and waist circumference.

Main Results:

  • A significant association was found between Prosocial Behaviour (SDQ-PSB) and subsequent BMI z-score changes (β: 0.040, p = 0.009).
  • No significant association was observed between SDQ-PSB and body composition or body shape measures.
  • The link between SDQ scores and weight gain in this cohort was generally absent or marginal.

Conclusions:

  • In young children predisposed to overweight, behavioral problems have minimal impact on weight gain.
  • While Prosocial Behaviour may relate to BMI increases, it doesn't appear to stem from greater fat accumulation.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the complex interplay between behavior and weight trajectory.
