Summary

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) with subretinal hyperreflective material (SHRM) generally shows good visual recovery. However, external limiting membrane damage at resolution indicates a poorer visual outcome in these patients.

Background:

  • Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a condition affecting the retina.
  • Subretinal hyperreflective material (SHRM) is a finding observed in some CSCR cases.
  • Understanding SHRM's behavior is crucial for predicting visual prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the appearance and behavior of subretinal hyperreflective material (SHRM) in eyes diagnosed with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR).
  • To correlate these findings with visual acuity outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 20 eyes with CSCR and SHRM.
  • Treatment modalities included laser photocoagulation (15 eyes) or observation (5 eyes).
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) were used for analysis at baseline and resolution.

Main Results:

  • 16 out of 20 eyes showed visual improvement.
  • Ellipsoid zone damage and external limiting membrane (ELM) damage at resolution were associated with poor visual outcomes.
  • Diffuse retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) abnormalities and scarring on FFA also correlated with worse vision.

Conclusions:

  • CSCR with SHRM generally presents a favorable visual prognosis.
  • External limiting membrane (ELM) damage identified at the resolution of neurosensory detachment is a significant predictor of poor visual acuity.
