Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Nursing
  • Healthcare Management

Background:

  • Workload is a significant factor affecting healthcare professionals.
  • Understanding factors influencing Family Health nurse workload is crucial for effective primary care delivery.
  • Previous research has not fully explored the multifaceted elements impacting Brazilian Family Health nurse workloads.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify key elements that increase or decrease the workload of Family Health nurses.
  • To explore the perceptions of successful Family Health teams in Brazil regarding workload factors.
  • To provide insights for improving working conditions and reducing burnout among primary care nurses.

Main Methods:

  • Multicenter qualitative study involving 40 Family Health nurses from 36 successful teams across five Brazilian regions.
  • Data collection utilized instrument triangulation: semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentary study (2013-2016).
  • Thematic Content Analysis, aided by Atlas.ti software, was employed for data analysis.

Main Results:

  • Increased workloads are primarily driven by precarious work environments, material/equipment deficits, workforce shortages, and excessive healthcare demand.
  • Factors contributing to reduced workloads include effective teamwork, professional recognition, strong user relationships, and positive interpersonal dynamics.
  • The study highlights a dialectic relationship where work process elements can either increase or decrease workload based on objective conditions and their management.

Conclusions:

  • Workload for Family Health nurses is significantly influenced by both systemic/environmental factors and interpersonal/team dynamics.
  • Addressing deficits in the work environment and workforce is essential to mitigate excessive workloads.
  • Fostering teamwork, recognition, and positive user relationships can effectively reduce nurse workload and potentially improve job satisfaction and retention.
