Anemia is highly prevalent in Chinese centenarians, especially men. Declining kidney function is a key factor associated with anemia in this population, particularly for Han Chinese and those with diabetes.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Nephrology
- Hematology
Background:
- Anemia is a common condition associated with increased morbidity and mortality, particularly in aging populations.
- Limited data exists on anemia prevalence and risk factors in centenarians.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of anemia in Chinese centenarians.
- To investigate the relationship between anemia and declining kidney function in this demographic.
Main Methods:
- A population-based cross-sectional study involving 1002 Chinese centenarians (2014-2016).
- Anemia defined by hemoglobin levels: <130 g/L for men, <120 g/L for women.
- Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) used to assess kidney function.
Main Results:
- Anemia prevalence was 68.5% (men: 76.1%, women: 66.8%); severe anemia (>100 g/L) was 19.6%.
- A nonlinear relationship was observed between anemia risk and eGFR (P=0.021).
- Ethnicity and diabetes mellitus influenced the association between reduced eGFR (<60 mL/min/1.73 m²) and anemia.
Conclusions:
- Anemia is highly prevalent in Chinese centenarians, with higher rates in men.
- Reduced kidney function is an independent predictor of anemia in centenarians.
- Consideration of decreased kidney function is crucial for managing anemia in the very elderly.
