Summary

Nursing data quality is poor, hindering repository use. This review found no studies on Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) in nursing practice, despite mapping efforts. Recommendations are provided for future data integration.

Background:

  • Nursing data quality is a significant barrier to its availability in data repositories.
  • The American Nurses Association recommends Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) to enhance nursing data quality in electronic health records.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize existing knowledge on the application of SNOMED terminology, including Pre-SNOMED CT and SNOMED CT, within the nursing domain.
  • To identify the current state of SNOMED CT adoption and integration in nursing practice and research.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across four databases and two search engines.
  • Twenty-nine articles were identified and reviewed for quality assessment using a modified System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Mapping Evaluation Assessment (MEA) tool.

Main Results:

  • All 29 reviewed studies involved mapping nursing terms (standardized or local) to SNOMED CT.
  • Quality assessment scores indicated moderate to good mapping and evaluation, but studies primarily focused on pre-application integration stages of SDLC.
  • No studies reported the actual use of SNOMED CT-coded nursing data in clinical practice.

Conclusions:

  • While progress has been made in mapping nursing concepts to SNOMED CT, its practical implementation in nursing remains limited.
  • Widespread adoption of interoperable SNOMED CT-coded nursing data requires a clear professional vision, stakeholder engagement, and adequate resources.
  • Future efforts should focus on integrating SNOMED CT into clinical applications to enable the evaluation of nursing's impact on patient outcomes.
