Narcolepsy01:07

Narcolepsy

436
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by pervasive, uncontrolled sleepiness and other sleep disturbances. One of its hallmark symptoms is an abrupt transition to REM sleep upon falling asleep, which causes symptoms typically associated with this phase to occur unexpectedly during wakefulness. These include the following symptoms, which typically last from a minute or two to half an hour.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychometrics
  • Sleep Medicine

Background:

  • The Narcolepsy Severity Scale (NSS) is a validated tool for assessing narcolepsy symptom severity and impact.
  • Previous validation of the NSS was limited to France.
  • This study aimed to validate the Chinese version of the NSS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present the psychometric properties of the Chinese-NSS.
  • To describe the score distribution of the Chinese-NSS in a Chinese population.

Main Methods:

  • 122 narcolepsy patients (41 female, 81 male; mean age 26.14 years) completed the Chinese-NSS.
  • Psychometric properties were evaluated using Cronbach's alpha, item-total score correlations, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA).
  • Correlations between NSS total scores and other clinical/sleep parameters were assessed.

Main Results:

  • EFA identified a three-factor model for the Chinese-NSS.
  • Internal consistency was acceptable, with Cronbach's alpha = 0.799.
  • The NSS total score showed significant correlations with various sleepiness, insomnia, depression, and quality of life scales, indicating good convergence.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first validation study of the NSS in an Asian population.
  • The Chinese-NSS demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties for use in Chinese patients.
  • Minor cultural differences may account for variations compared to the original French validation study.
