Barriers to Effective Communication II01:21

Barriers to Effective Communication II

4.5K
The barriers to effective communication also include cultural barriers, semantic barriers, gender barriers, and time constraints.
Cultural barriers:
Differences in values, beliefs, religion, knowledge, and tradition can significantly impact communication. Awareness of nonverbal cues is critical, especially when conversing with a patient from a different culture. What appears appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another.
Semantic barriers:
As a result of their tendency to use...

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation I: Adult

489
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, is a life-saving emergency procedure performed when a person's heart has stopped beating or they are no longer breathing. The foundation of CPR is Basic Life Support (BLS), which focuses on the early recognition of cardiac arrest, the immediate start of high-quality chest compressions, and the timely use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).Assessing Responsiveness and Checking the Carotid PulseWhen approaching an unresponsive person, first ensure...

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation III: AED Use

452
Introduction to AEDAn Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable medical device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electrical shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, leading to a loss of blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. In such emergencies, time is of the essence, and using an AED, combined with Cardiopulmonary...

Barriers to Effective Communication I

10.8K
A communication barrier is any distortion or interruption during a conversation, resulting in miscommunication of the message. A good communicator should know these barriers and continuously check for the listener's understanding by obtaining feedback.
Communication barriers include the following:
Physiological barriers: They are limitations caused by a person's health condition or disability, such as hearing loss, poor eyesight, illness, or unconsciousness. An example to overcome this...

Bystander Effect

10.1K
The discussion of bullying highlights the problem of witnesses not intervening to help a victim. This is a common occurrence, as the following well-publicized event demonstrates. In 1964, in Queens, New York, a 19-year-old woman named Kitty Genovese was attacked by a person with a knife near the back entrance to her apartment building and again in the hallway inside her apartment building. When the attack occurred, she screamed for help numerous times and eventually died from her stab wounds.

Assessment of apical radial pulse01:25

Assessment of apical radial pulse

1.2K
Apical-Radial (A-R) Pulse Assessment
The A-R pulse assessment involves simultaneous evaluation of the apical and radial pulses. When the apical and radial pulse rates vary, this assessment helps identify a pulse deficit.

Summary

Public preference for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education favors instructor-led classes at libraries. This can help structure CPR outreach to increase bystander CPR rates.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Emergency Medicine Education

Background:

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a critical life-saving skill.
  • Understanding public preferences for CPR education is essential for effective program design.
  • Optimizing CPR training delivery can improve bystander intervention rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess general public preferences for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education formats.
  • To determine preferred times and locations for CPR training delivery.

Main Methods:

  • A 23-item survey was administered to a convenience sample at public gatherings in Baltimore, MD.
  • Data were collected between May 2015 and February 2017.
  • 516 surveys were analyzed to understand CPR education preferences.

Main Results:

  • 24% of respondents felt very confident performing CPR.
  • Confidence in CPR performance decreased with time since last training.
  • Instructor-led classes were the most favored format, with libraries being the preferred location.

Conclusions:

  • Instructor-led CPR training at libraries is the most preferred educational approach.
  • Community festivals and event-based learning stations were least favored.
  • Findings can inform CPR outreach programs to boost bystander CPR rates.
