This study demonstrates successful biodiesel production from sludge palm oil (SPO). A novel two-step process involving free fatty acid (FFA) extraction and enzymatic esterification was developed for upgrading low-grade oil into valuable biofuel.
Area of Science:
- Biotechnology
- Chemical Engineering
- Sustainable Energy
Background:
- Sludge palm oil (SPO) is a low-cost byproduct of palm oil refining with high free fatty acid (FFA) content.
- There is significant potential to convert low-grade oils like SPO into valuable biofuels.
- Traditional methods for biodiesel production can be energy-intensive or generate waste.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and present a novel, efficient method for biodiesel production from sludge palm oil (SPO).
- To investigate the feasibility of upgrading low-grade oils into biofuels.
- To optimize the process for high free fatty acid (FFA) content oils.
Main Methods:
- A two-step process was employed: (i) free fatty acid (FFA) extraction from SPO via saponification using a hydroalcoholic solution, and (ii) enzymatic esterification of the extracted FFAs.
- Immobilised alginate-PVA lipase beads were utilized as a biocatalyst for the esterification reaction.
- A modified fatty acid extraction technique was applied for efficient preparation of fatty acids from SPO.
Main Results:
- Successful biodiesel production from sludge palm oil (SPO) was achieved.
- The modified fatty acid extraction method proved effective for preparing fatty acids from SPO.
- The immobilised alginate-PVA lipase beads demonstrated efficacy as a biocatalyst in the esterification process.
Conclusions:
- Biodiesel production from sludge palm oil is feasible using the presented novel method.
- The developed two-step process offers a viable route for upgrading low-grade oils into biofuels.
- The use of immobilised lipase beads provides an efficient and potentially sustainable biocatalytic approach for esterification.
