Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) can cause encephalitis. This study found no significant differences in SFTSV virulence factors between strains causing encephalitis and those that do not, suggesting SFTSV is inherently neurotropic.
Area of Science:
- Virology
- Neuroscience
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Encephalitis is a rare complication of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) infection.
- Limited data exist on the pathogenic mechanisms of SFTSV-associated encephalitis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the genetic and structural characteristics of SFTSV strains isolated from patients with encephalitis.
- To explore potential virulence factors contributing to SFTSV-induced encephalitis.
Main Methods:
- Whole-genome sequencing of SFTSV strains from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of two encephalitis patients.
- Phylogenetic analysis of SFTSV M segment.
- 3D structural modeling of glycoprotein Gn using SWISS-MODEL.
Main Results:
- Specific mutations (P98L, T665S) were identified in the M fragment of the studied SFTSV strains.
- No significant variations in glycoprotein Gn were observed compared to non-encephalitis strains.
- Phylogenetic analysis indicated high similarity between encephalitis and non-encephalitis SFTSV strains.
Conclusions:
- SFTSV virulence factors do not appear to differ between strains causing encephalitis and those that do not.
- The findings support the hypothesis that SFTSV possesses inherent neurotropic properties.
