Summary

Serum magnesium (Mg) levels did not differ between vitiligo patients and controls. However, lower Mg concentrations correlated with more severe vitiligo, suggesting a potential role in disease progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate serum magnesium concentrations in vitiligo patients compared to healthy controls.
  • To explore the relationship between serum magnesium levels and vitiligo severity.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 27 vitiligo patients and 27 matched healthy controls.
  • Serum magnesium levels were measured and compared between groups.
  • Correlation analysis was performed between serum magnesium and Vitiligo Area Severity Index (VASI) and total body surface area (TBSA).

Main Results:

  • Mean serum magnesium concentrations were similar between vitiligo patients (0.75 ± 0.07 mmol/L) and controls (0.77 ± 0.07 mmol/L).
  • No statistically significant difference was found in serum Mg levels between the groups (P=0.95).
  • A positive correlation was observed between serum Mg concentration and VASI score and TBSA affected by vitiligo.

Conclusions:

  • Serum magnesium levels do not significantly differ between vitiligo patients and healthy individuals.
  • Despite no difference in mean levels, serum Mg concentration showed a positive correlation with vitiligo severity.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the role of magnesium in vitiligo pathogenesis and progression.
