Summary

This study assessed mucormycosis management using the EQUAL Score, finding adherence to guidelines. Despite challenges, the EQUAL Score can aid clinical decisions for this life-threatening fungal infection.

Background:

Mucormycosis is a severe, life-threatening fungal infection with high mortality.
Effective management is complex and adherence to clinical guidelines is crucial but often underreported.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the adherence to clinical guidelines in mucormycosis management.
To assess the utility of the EQUAL Score for quality assessment in mucormycosis care.

Main Methods:

Retrospective chart review of 27 patients with mucormycosis at the University Hospital of Cologne.
Data collection using the EQUAL Mucormycosis Score criteria and economic factors.

Main Results:

53.8% of the maximum EQUAL Mucormycosis Score was achieved, indicating guideline adherence.
Liposomal amphotericin B was the primary first-line treatment (70.4%).
Crude mortality was 51.9% with a median survival of 113 days.

Conclusions:

Mucormycosis management in the study cohort aligned with current guidelines.
The EQUAL Score is a valuable tool for routine clinical settings to assess and improve mucormycosis care.
Further research is needed to confirm if guideline adherence improves patient outcomes.
