Fetal circulation is a unique system that facilitates the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products between the developing fetus and the mother. This intricate process takes place through a special organ called the placenta.

Summary

Umbilical cord accidents, a known cause of fetal death in nonhuman primates, are reported for the first time in macaques. This study documents two cases of cord accidents in rhesus macaques leading to fetal demise.

Background:

Umbilical cord accidents are a significant cause of fetal mortality in various nonhuman primate species.
Despite their prevalence in other primates, cord accidents have not been previously documented in macaques.

Observation:

This study reports two distinct cases of umbilical cord accidents in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).
The accidents occurred at different gestational stages, leading to fetal death around 110 and 50 days of gestation.

Findings:

The findings confirm that umbilical cord accidents can occur in macaques, a species commonly used in biomedical research.
This represents the first documented evidence of such events in this primate model.

Implications:

These findings highlight the need to consider cord accidents in the differential diagnosis of fetal loss in macaque studies.
Understanding the incidence and causes of cord accidents is crucial for improving reproductive success and the reliability of nonhuman primate models in research.
