Women with chronic pelvic pain experience heightened pain sensitivity. A simple bedside test revealed that repeated gentle touch significantly worsens pain, indicating central sensitization and neuroplasticity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To further characterize central sensitization in women with CPP.
  • To investigate temporal summation using a bedside cotton-tipped applicator test.
  • To explore the presence of pain wind-up in CPP.

Main Methods:

  • 36 women (18 with CPP and allodynia, 18 controls) participated.
  • A benign stimulus was applied to the abdomen at varying frequencies (10, 30, 100 seconds).
  • Pain was rated on a 1-10 scale and analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA.

  • Pain scores differed significantly between women with and without CPP (P=0.002).
  • Women with CPP showed a significant increase in pain with successive strokes (P<0.05 for all comparisons).
