Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Plastic Surgery

Background:

  • Rhinophyma, a severe form of rosacea, causes significant nasal disfigurement and impacts patient quality of life.
  • Surgical intervention is the primary treatment for rhinophyma, addressing sebaceous gland hyperplasia and tissue overgrowth.

Observation:

  • This study evaluates microdebrider-assisted excision in five patients with rhinophyma.
  • The procedure involves initial scalpel excision followed by microdebrider contouring for precise tissue removal.

Findings:

  • All five patients experienced uneventful recoveries with excellent cosmetic results.
  • Microdebrider use reduced operative time, facilitated finer tissue manipulation, and preserved skin regeneration areas.
  • No postoperative complications, including infections, were reported in this case series.

Implications:

  • Microdebrider-assisted rhinophyma excision presents a safe and aesthetically favorable surgical option.
  • Further research with larger patient cohorts is recommended to validate the long-term efficacy and value of this technique.
