Summary

This study reports the first case of meningioma with stromal elastosis, a condition where elastinophilic material accumulates in the tumor stroma. The observed elastogenesis transformed the meningioma, highlighting a novel aspect of meningioma progression.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Pathology
  • Histology

Background:

  • Meningiomas are tumors arising from the meninges.
  • Meningotheliomatous meningioma is a common subtype.
  • Stromal composition is crucial for understanding tumor behavior.

Observation:

  • A parasagittal meningioma exhibited abundant elastinophilic material in its intercellular stroma.
  • This stromal elastosis led to a transformation into a fibroelastotic node.
  • Recurrence of the meningioma showed similar histological features, including stromal elastosis.

Findings:

  • This case presents the first documented instance of meningioma with stromal elastosis.
  • Unequivocal evidence of elastogenesis was demonstrated within the meningioma.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The process altered the typical histological appearance of meningotheliomatous meningioma.
  • Implications:

    • Stromal elastosis may represent a novel pathway in meningioma development or progression.
    • Understanding elastogenesis could offer new insights into meningioma pathogenesis.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the clinical significance of stromal elastosis in meningiomas.
