Summary

Serum platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) levels are significantly lower in alcoholic patients, particularly those with cirrhosis. Prothrombin activity and platelet count are key independent predictors of PDGF-C levels in this population.

Background:

  • Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is implicated in liver collagen deposition via hepatic stellate cells.
  • Conflicting reports exist regarding serum PDGF levels in chronic viral hepatitis.
  • PDGF's role extends beyond fibrosis to vascular, neuronal, and muscle conditions, necessitating its study in alcoholism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum PDGF-C levels in alcoholic patients.
  • To explore the relationship between PDGF-C and liver function, ethanol intake, and inflammatory markers in alcoholics.

Main Methods:

  • Serum PDGF-C, inflammatory markers (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in 62 alcoholic patients and 17 controls.
  • Routine laboratory tests and ethanol intake history were collected.
  • Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify factors associated with PDGF-C levels.

Main Results:

  • Alcoholic patients exhibited significantly lower serum PDGF-C levels compared to controls (675 vs. 1074 pg/ml).
  • Cirrhotic alcoholics showed even lower PDGF-C levels than non-cirrhotic alcoholics (549 vs. 778 pg/ml).
  • PDGF-C positively correlated with prothrombin activity and platelet count, and inversely with bilirubin, IL-6, IL-8, and MDA.

Conclusions:

  • Serum PDGF-C levels are decreased in alcoholics, with a more pronounced reduction in cirrhotics.
  • Prothrombin activity and platelet count emerged as independent predictors of PDGF-C levels in alcoholics.
