Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Gerontology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a neurodegenerative condition causing significant behavioral changes.
  • Apathy and disinhibition in FTD are particularly distressing for family carers, increasing stress and burden.
  • Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) has not been previously studied in FTD populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the functional basis of apathy and disinhibition in FTD.
  • To explore the acceptability of a home-based PBS intervention for FTD dyads.
  • To assess the impact of PBS on challenging behaviors in FTD.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study involving four FTD dyads.
  • Occupational therapist-led, home-based PBS intervention.
  • Assessment of behavior function, challenging behaviors, and acceptability pre- and post-intervention (mean 3.9 months).

Main Results:

  • PBS was found to be an acceptable intervention for all participating dyads.
  • Sensory and tangible factors were identified as the most common functions maintaining behaviors.
  • Improvements were observed in aspects of apathetic and disinhibited behaviors post-intervention.

Conclusions:

  • This pilot study demonstrates the acceptability and potential benefits of PBS for individuals with FTD.
  • PBS may offer a valuable support framework for managing behavioral changes in FTD.
  • Further rigorous trials are warranted to develop tailored services for FTD.
