Does load-bearing materials influence hip capsule thickness in total hip replacement? An MRI case-matched study

Ceramic-on-ceramic total hip replacements (THR) lead to thicker hip capsules compared to polyethylene (PE) bearings or native hips. Painful hips, regardless of bearing type, showed thinner capsules in this MRI study.

- This is the first in-vivo study demonstrating that COC THR is associated with increased hip capsule thickness compared to PE THR and native hips.
- Thinner hip capsules may be indicative of pain in total hip replacement patients.
