Background:

  • Growing demand for obesity surgery necessitates new and improved bariatric centers.
  • Challenges exist in both peri-operative care and the organization of bariatric facilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify key challenges in peri-operative care for bariatric patients.
  • To pinpoint organizational and operational difficulties in modern bariatric centers.

Main Methods:

  • An anonymous survey was distributed to 70 bariatric surgeons and residents across 17 centers.
  • The questionnaire assessed difficulties in pre-operative care, post-operative care, and center organization on a 1-5 scale.

Main Results:

  • Smoking cessation was the most challenging pre-operative recommendation (3.47 ±1.28).
  • Implementing the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol was the main post-operative challenge (2.27 ±1.31).
  • Access to operating theater equipment for morbidly obese patients was the biggest infrastructure hurdle (3.8 ±1.68).

Conclusions:

  • Executing pre-operative recommendations (smoking cessation, weight loss) and ERAS protocols are difficult in bariatric departments.
  • Future bariatric centers require specialized infrastructure for morbidly obese patients and inclusion in a centralized register.
