Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is prevalent in China. Both short sleep durations under 6 hours and long durations over 9 hours are linked to increased MetS risk, suggesting sleep impacts metabolic health.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Metabolic Health
Background:
- Metabolic syndrome (MetS) poses a significant public health challenge.
- Understanding the prevalence and risk factors for MetS is crucial for targeted interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of MetS in Henan, China.
- To investigate the association between sleep duration and MetS in adults.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study of 8,272 adults (≥18 years) in Henan, China (2013-2014).
- Data collected via interviews (demographics, lifestyle, medical history) and physical measurements.
- Restricted Cubic Spline Regression used to analyze sleep duration and MetS relationships.
Main Results:
- The crude prevalence of MetS was 30.3%; age-standardized rate was 23.6%.
- MetS prevalence was higher in men than women (P=.01).
- A U-shaped relationship was observed: sleep durations <6 hours or >9 hours were associated with increased MetS risk (ORs 1.10-2.15).
Conclusions:
- MetS is highly prevalent in the studied Chinese adult population.
- Sleep duration is a potential determinant of metabolic health.
- Both insufficient and excessive sleep durations are linked to a higher risk of developing MetS.
