Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Telemedicine

Background:

  • Access to postoperative aural rehabilitation is a barrier to cochlear implant (CI) adoption.
  • Telehealth offers a potential solution to overcome geographical and mobility limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of remote CI programming and aural rehabilitation using telehealth.
  • To assess the feasibility and patient satisfaction with telehealth-based CI care.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study at a single cochlear implant center.
  • Included 22 CIs in 20 patients who underwent remote programming between 2015 and 2018.
  • Collected data on AzBio scores, impedances, comfort/threshold levels, and IOI-CI questionnaire responses.

Main Results:

  • Telehealth enabled reliable acquisition of threshold, comfort, and impedance levels, comparable to in-person sessions.
  • AzBio scores and pure tone averages were similar across telehealth and live sessions.
  • Patients reported high satisfaction with hearing outcomes and remote programming sessions via the IOI-CI.

Conclusions:

  • Remote CI programming via telehealth yields reliable measurements and comparable hearing outcomes to in-person sessions.
  • Telehealth is a cost-effective, safe, and patient-satisfactory method for delivering post-CI audiologic care.
  • This approach is particularly beneficial for patients with limited mobility or those residing in remote locations.
