Computed Tomography

7.9K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Semiconductor Detectors

Background:

  • Compact gamma cameras are essential for nuclear medicine and radioguided surgery.
  • CdTe semiconductor hybrid pixel detectors offer potential for improved imaging performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the performance of the prototype compact gamma camera (MediPROBE) for coded aperture imaging.
  • To evaluate its suitability for tasks like sentinel lymph node localization, breast imaging, and thyroid imaging.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a CdTe semiconductor hybrid pixel detector (Medipix2/Timepix) with coded aperture masks (0.07-mm or 0.08-mm holes).
  • Performed laboratory measurements of field of view, spatial resolution, and signal-difference-to-noise ratio using various gamma-emitting sources.
  • Evaluated system spatial resolution in lateral and longitudinal directions.

Main Results:

  • Achieved a lateral system spatial resolution of 0.56 mm FWHM with a 0.08-mm coded aperture mask and a 60 keV source.
  • Demonstrated a longitudinal resolution of approximately 3 mm for 3D source localization.
  • Showed significant spatial resolution improvement compared to pinhole apertures.

Conclusions:

  • The MediPROBE prototype demonstrates promising performance for coded aperture imaging in nuclear medicine.
  • Its improved spatial resolution makes it suitable for various radioguided surgery and diagnostic imaging tasks.
  • Further development with high-resolution coded apertures enhances its clinical potential.
