We sequenced the genome of Enterococcus faecium ICIS 18 from human feces. This analysis identified genes conferring resistance to metals and antibiotics like fluoroquinolones and beta-lactams.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Genomics
- Antimicrobial Resistance
Background:
- Enterococcus faecium is a significant opportunistic pathogen.
- Understanding the genetic basis of antibiotic resistance in E. faecium is crucial for public health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report the draft genome sequence of Enterococcus faecium strain ICIS 18.
- To identify genes associated with antimicrobial and metal resistance in this strain.
Main Methods:
- Whole-genome sequencing of Enterococcus faecium ICIS 18.
- Bioinformatic analysis of the obtained genome sequence.
Main Results:
- The draft genome sequence of E. faecium ICIS 18 was successfully generated.
- Genes conferring resistance to metals were identified.
- Genes encoding resistance to fluoroquinolones and beta-lactam antibiotics were identified.
Conclusions:
- The genome sequence provides valuable insights into the genetic makeup of E. faecium ICIS 18.
- The identified resistance genes highlight potential challenges in treating infections caused by this strain.
