Surface oxides completely inhibit platinum (Pt) electrochemical deposition on tin (Sn). However, alloying Pt with Sn creates a highly active catalyst for carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation.
Area of Science:
- Electrochemistry
- Materials Science
- Catalysis
Background:
- Electrochemical deposition is key for creating novel catalyst structures, like platinum (Pt) thin films on conductive supports.
- Current research on Pt deposition often uses noble metal substrates, overlooking alternatives like conductive oxides (e.g., antimony doped tin oxide) for applications such as fuel cells.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the electrochemical deposition of Pt on a tin (Sn) surface, serving as a model for non-noble metal oxide supports.
- To understand the influence of metallic Sn versus surface oxides on Pt deposition.
- To explore the catalytic activity of the resulting Pt-Sn system for carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation.
Main Methods:
- Electrochemical deposition of Pt onto a Sn substrate using K2PtCl4 as the Pt precursor in a borate buffer solution.
- Characterization of the deposition process on both metallic Sn and oxidized Sn surfaces.
- Evaluation of the electrocatalytic activity of the Pt-Sn alloy for CO oxidation.
Main Results:
- Surface oxides on Sn were found to completely inhibit the electrochemical deposition of Pt, a novel finding.
- Direct alloying of electrodeposited Pt with the Sn support was achieved.
- The resulting Pt-Sn alloy catalyst demonstrated high activity for CO oxidation.
Conclusions:
- Surface oxides play a critical role in inhibiting Pt electrochemical deposition on Sn.
- The Pt-Sn alloy formed via direct alloying exhibits promising electrocatalytic properties for CO oxidation.
- This study provides insights into Pt deposition on non-noble metal oxide supports, relevant for catalyst development.
