Summary

Choroidal thickness did not differ between patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis (LN) in remission and those with SLE without LN. Further research is needed for active lupus nephritis cases.

Background:

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease.
  • Lupus nephritis (LN) is a severe complication affecting the kidneys.
  • Choroidal thickness changes may indicate systemic disease activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare choroidal thickness in patients with SLE and LN in remission versus SLE patients without LN.
  • To assess potential ocular manifestations in SLE patients with varying renal involvement.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case-control study of 23 SLE patients.
  • Diagnosis of LN based on renal pathology; remission defined by proteinuria and serum creatinine.
  • Choroidal thickness measured using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in foveal choroidal thickness between LN and non-LN SLE patients in remission (281±78 µm vs. 288±70 µm, p=0.766).
