This study investigated aspirin
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular medicine
- Clinical trials
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Previous studies suggest aspirin's efficacy in preventing coronary thrombosis.
- Aspirin's role in reducing mortality after myocardial infarction requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of aspirin in decreasing mortality rates among patients with a history of myocardial infarction.
- To confirm aspirin's potential benefits in secondary prevention of cardiovascular events.
Main Methods:
- A randomized, double-blind, multicenter clinical trial involving 4200 patients.
- Centralized monitoring and a comprehensive committee structure ensured study uniformity and data comparability.
Main Results:
- The study aimed to determine if aspirin reduces mortality post-myocardial infarction.
- Data analysis focused on comparing outcomes between aspirin and placebo groups.
Conclusions:
- Findings will inform clinical guidelines regarding aspirin use in post-myocardial infarction patients.
- The study contributes to understanding aspirin's role in cardiovascular disease prevention.
Abstract:
The Aspirin Myocaridal Infarction Study is a randomized, double-blind clinical trial designed to study the potential value of aspirin in the reduction of mortality in patients who have had a prior myocardial infarction. This trial is based upon several previously published studies which suggest that aspirin may be valuable iprevention of coronary thrombosis. The requirement of 4200 patients dictates that the study must be multicenter, and good design requires that the study be collaborative with cnetral monitoring and an elaborate committee structure to insure uniformity and comparability.
