Summary
Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients show impaired naming accuracy compared to controls. These language difficulties in Persian RRMS patients highlight the need for specific naming tests in MS evaluation and rehabilitation.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Neuroscience
- Speech and Language Pathology
Background:
- Cognitive impairment is prevalent in multiple sclerosis (MS).
- Language difficulties in MS are controversial, especially in non-English speakers.
- Limited research exists on naming accuracy in Persian-speaking MS patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate naming accuracy in Persian patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).
- To compare naming performance between RRMS patients and healthy controls.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 30 Persian RRMS patients from Isfahan, Iran.
- Assessment included the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), and a Naming Test.
- Performance was compared against a control group.
Main Results:
- RRMS patients exhibited significantly more naming errors (2.1 ± 1.8) than controls (0.54 ± 1.1, P=0.02).
- The average MMSE score for MS patients was 27.23 (SD=2), compared to 28.96 (SD=3.2) in controls.
- Naming impairment was observed irrespective of the disability score.
Conclusions:
- Naming ability may be compromised in RRMS patients, independent of disability.
- Specific language function tests, particularly for naming, are recommended for MS patient evaluation.
- Incorporating naming assessments into rehabilitation strategies for MS is advised.
