Summary

Multiple sclerosis (MS) prevalence was more than double in a polluted city with an iron and steel factory compared to a clean rural area. This suggests air pollution may be an etiological factor in MS.

  • To determine the prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in a city with significant air pollution from an iron and steel factory.
  • To compare MS prevalence in an industrialized, polluted city with a nearby rural, clean city.

  • A cross-sectional, population-based, descriptive epidemiologic study design was employed.
  • Screening was conducted in Ereğli city (industrial, polluted) and Devrek city (rural, clean), located 40 km apart.
