Summary

Pneumatic retinopexy successfully reattached 98% of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments, with high success rates in phakic eyes. Further studies are needed to confirm its safety and efficacy.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Surgery

Background:

  • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a serious condition requiring timely intervention.
  • Pneumatic retinopexy (PR) is a less invasive surgical option for RRD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of pneumatic retinopexy in treating rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
  • To identify factors influencing the success rate of PR.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 55 consecutive RRD cases treated with PR.
  • Exclusion criteria included inferior breaks (4-8 o'clock) and macular holes.
  • Data collected on reattachment rates, visual acuity, and complications.

Main Results:

  • An overall reattachment rate of 98% was achieved (82% with initial PR, 98% after secondary surgery).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Initial success rates varied by lens status: 92% in phakic, 66% in pseudophakic, and 57% in aphakic eyes.
  • New retinal breaks occurred in 11% of cases, predominantly in pseudophakic/aphakic eyes.
  • Conclusions:

    • Pneumatic retinopexy demonstrates high reattachment rates for specific types of RRD.
    • Phakic eyes showed better visual acuity outcomes in macula-off detachments.
    • Randomized controlled trials are necessary to definitively establish the safety, efficacy, and indications for PR.
