Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Child Psychology
  • Mental Health

Background:

  • Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) diagnoses have surged exponentially in recent years.
  • Childhood MPD is a recognized but less understood entity.
  • Adult MPD is associated with significant morbidity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the increasing prevalence of MPD in children.
  • To advocate for early identification and treatment of childhood MPD.
  • To reduce the long-term morbidity associated with MPD.

Main Methods:

  • Review of retrospective patient reports.
  • Analysis of 12 reported child case studies, with 4 noted as "incipient MPD."
  • Comparison of treatment response between children and adults.

Main Results:

  • Childhood MPD appears to respond more rapidly to treatment than adult MPD.
  • Early identification and intervention are recommended due to high morbidity in adults.
  • 12 cases of childhood MPD were identified, 4 possibly incipient.

Conclusions:

  • A high index of suspicion and screening questionnaires are recommended for high-risk children.
  • Early detection and treatment of childhood MPD can potentially decrease adult cases and associated morbidity.
  • Further research is needed on prevalence, etiology, and effective treatments for MPD.
