Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Electrochemistry
  • Nanotechnology

Background:

  • Borophene shows promise as a 2D anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high capacity and low energy barrier.
  • Free-standing borophene, however, suffers from poor stability, limiting its practical application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential of a borophene/boron nitride (B/BN) interface as a stable and high-performance anode material for LIBs.
  • To evaluate the electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties of the B/BN interface.

Main Methods:

  • Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to study the B/BN interface.
  • Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to assess thermal stability.
  • Nudged elastic band (NEB) calculations determined the Li diffusion energy barrier.

Main Results:

  • The B/BN interface demonstrated significantly improved thermal and mechanical stability compared to pristine borophene.
  • The interface exhibited metallic electronic behavior and a three-fold increase in mechanical stiffness.
  • A high specific charging capacity of 1698 mA h g-1 and a low Li diffusion energy barrier were observed.

Conclusions:

  • The B/BN interface presents enhanced stability and excellent electrochemical performance, making it a superior anode material for LIBs.
  • This composite material addresses the stability limitations of borophene, paving the way for advanced battery technologies.
