Summary

Cardiac lesions in rats likely originate from neural cells. Most lesions, including tumors, stained positive for S-100 protein and neuron-specific enolase, suggesting a neural origin for endomyocardial disease.

  • Histopathological examination of 58 cardiac lesions from rats.
  • Immunohistochemical staining for S-100 protein.
  • Immunohistochemical staining for neuron-specific enolase on selected cases.

Main Results:

  • The majority of cardiac lesions, including 10 tumors, showed positive staining for S-100 protein.
  • Duplicate sections from selected cases also reacted positively for neuron-specific enolase.
  • These findings were observed across different stages of endomyocardial disease.

Conclusions:

  • The positive staining for neural markers suggests a probable neural origin for these cardiac lesions.
  • The study provides evidence supporting a neurogenic hypothesis for endomyocardial disease progression to tumors in this rat model.
