Background:

  • General population prevalence of anxiety, depression, and PTSD is estimated at 5.9%, 3.3%, and 4.4% respectively.
  • Previous research has not extensively detailed the psychological burden following colorectal surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of psychological conditions post-colorectal surgery.
  • To identify risk factors associated with adverse psychological outcomes in this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 1150 patients undergoing colorectal resection were invited to complete validated screening questionnaires (GAD-7, PHQ-9, PCL-5) 12-48 months post-surgery.
  • Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to identify significant risk factors for psychological distress.

Main Results:

  • Out of 371 respondents (32.3% response rate), 28% screened positive for at least one psychological condition.
  • Prevalence rates were 20% for anxiety, 22% for depression, and 14% for PTSD.
  • Younger age and female gender were identified as significant risk factors for poorer psychological outcomes.

  • Colorectal surgery patients exhibit a high prevalence of anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
  • Younger patients and women are identified as particularly vulnerable populations.
  • Further research is recommended to develop effective prevention, detection, and treatment strategies for psychological distress post-colorectal surgery.
