Background:

Collaborative Learning Health Systems (CLHSs) facilitate large-scale collaboration among patients, clinicians, and researchers to enhance health outcomes and knowledge generation.
The actor-oriented architecture provides a framework for CLHSs, comprising self-organizing actors, a shared commons for resource exchange, and structures supporting multiactor collaboration.
CLHSs can evolve by implementing changes that strengthen the actor-oriented architecture, thereby enabling broader participation and resource sharing.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe and quantify the implementation of the actor-oriented architecture within an established CLHS.
To assess the evolution of key components of the actor-oriented architecture over time.

Main Methods:

The study utilized the ImproveCareNow network, a CLHS focused on pediatric inflammatory bowel disease, as a case example.
Network-level indicators related to the actor-oriented architecture were tracked from 2010 to 2016.

Main Results:

Measures were identified for actors, the commons, and participation-enhancing mechanisms within the CLHS.
Analysis revealed that ImproveCareNow demonstrated changes across the three core elements of the actor-oriented architecture during the study period.

Conclusions:

The implementation of an actor-oriented architecture within CLHSs is measurable.
The actor-oriented architecture offers a valuable conceptual framework for the development and optimization of CLHSs.
The metrics employed serve as actionable indicators of the overall "health" and effectiveness of a CLHS.
