Summary
Nocturnal Leopard geckos exhibit UV reflectance in white patches, potentially enhancing antipredation signaling. While coloration differences between groups were minimal, UV signals may play a role in communication.
Area of Science:
- Herpetology
- Animal Behavior
- Visual Ecology
Background:
- Diurnal reptiles utilize complex visual signals; nocturnal species like geckos also possess sensitive color vision, including UV sensitivity.
- Nocturnal geckos may possess hidden coloration features for intraspecific (mate choice) or interspecific (antipredation) signaling due to their chromatic sensitivity.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the hypothesis of hidden visual signaling in nocturnal Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius).
- To explore the role of UV reflectance in antipredation defense and courtship in Leopard geckos, considering their ontogenetic color change and behavioral shifts.
Main Methods:
- Utilized UV photography and visual modeling to analyze coloration aspects (luminance, contrast, color proportions).
- Compared coloration patterns across different sexes, age groups, and populations of Leopard geckos.
Main Results:
- Leopard geckos display significant UV reflectance in white patches on their tails and, in juveniles, on their heads.
- No substantial differences in coloration were observed between the studied groups (sexes, ages, populations).
Conclusions:
- UV reflectance is present in Leopard geckos, particularly on body parts involved in defense displays.
- The localization of UV reflectance on the head and tail may enhance antipredation signaling effectiveness, especially in juveniles.

Epistasis
49.9K
In addition to multiple alleles at the same locus influencing traits, numerous genes or alleles at different locations may interact and influence phenotypes in a phenomenon called epistasis. For example, rabbit fur can be black or brown depending on whether the animal is homozygous dominant or heterozygous at a TYRP1 locus. However, if the rabbit is also homozygous recessive at a locus on the tyrosinase gene (TYR), it will have an unshaded coat that appears white, regardless of its TYRP1...

UV–Vis Spectrum
1.9K
When light passes through a substance, a portion of the light is absorbed while the remaining light is reflected or transmitted. If the molecule absorbs light between the wavelengths of 180–400 nm range, the UV spectrum is obtained, and if it absorbs light in the 400–780 nm wavelength range, the visible spectrum is obtained.
The UV–Vis spectrum of a molecule is the plot of its absorbance versus wavelength. The plot is drawn by taking molar...

UV–Vis Spectrometers
3.2K
The absorbance of UV and visible (UV–visible) radiations is measured using a UV–visible spectrophotometer. Deuterium lamps, which emit UV radiation, and tungsten lamps, which produce radiation in the visible region, are used as light sources in UV–visible spectrophotometers. A monochromator or prism is used for diffraction grating, i.e., to split the incoming radiation into different wavelengths. A system of slits is used to focus the desired wavelength on the sample cell.
