Abstract:
We isolated phage Ec_Makalu_002, which infects uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli Here, we report its complete genome sequence, annotated features, and relatedness to other phages.
Insights
Researchers isolated a novel phage, Ec_Makalu_002, targeting uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains. This study details its complete genome sequence and annotated features, providing insights into phage-bacterial interactions.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Virology
- Genomics
Background:
- Uropathogenic *Escherichia coli* (UPEC) are a significant cause of urinary tract infections.
- Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that infect bacteria and are being explored as therapeutic agents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report the complete genome sequence and annotated features of phage Ec_Makalu_002.
- To analyze the phylogenetic relationship of Ec_Makalu_002 with other known phages.
Main Methods:
- Isolation and characterization of phage Ec_Makalu_002 from environmental samples.
- Whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis for feature annotation.
- Comparative genomics to determine phage relatedness.
Main Results:
- The complete genome sequence of phage Ec_Makalu_002 was successfully obtained and annotated.
- Key genomic features, including genes related to replication, structure, and lysis, were identified.
- Phylogenetic analysis placed Ec_Makalu_002 within a specific group of *Escherichia coli*-infecting phages.
Conclusions:
- Phage Ec_Makalu_002 represents a newly characterized phage with potential applications in combating UPEC infections.
- The genomic data provides a foundation for further studies on phage biology and therapeutic development.
