    Summary

Essential hypertension was effectively controlled using chlorothiazide combined with various beta-blockers. These medications also caused minor increases in triglycerides and reduced glucagon levels.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Endocrinology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Essential hypertension is a prevalent cardiovascular condition requiring effective management.
    • Beta-blockers are commonly prescribed for hypertension, but their metabolic effects warrant investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of chlorothiazide in combination with different beta-blockers for essential hypertension.
    • To assess the impact of these combination therapies on plasma triglyceride and glucagon levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Patients with essential hypertension received chlorothiazide twice daily.
    • Concurrently, patients were administered single daily doses of atenolol, metoprolol, pindolol, or propranolol.
    • Plasma triglyceride and fasting immuno-reactive glucagon concentrations were measured.

    Main Results:

    • Combination therapy effectively controlled blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension.
    • All evaluated beta-adrenoreceptor-blocking drugs were associated with small, statistically significant increases in plasma triglyceride concentrations.
    • Fasting immuno-reactive glucagon concentrations were suppressed by each beta-blocker studied.

    Conclusions:

    • Chlorothiazide combined with atenolol, metoprolol, pindolol, or propranolol offers effective blood pressure control for essential hypertension.
    • These beta-blockers may induce favorable or unfavorable metabolic changes, including altered lipid and glucose metabolism.
